UNRWA and Health Insight Asia have taken a key step in improving healthcare for millions of Palestine Refugees by taking the Agency’s use of electronic medical records to a new level.
Funded by the KfW Development Bank through Germany’s Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the initiative seeks to modernise healthcare delivery across 143 UNRWA health centres through a unified Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system, which will be used by 3,200 UNRWA healthcare staff across the Agency’s five fields of operation.
The initiative will help the Agency reimagine how care is accessed, managed, and experienced by millions of Palestine Refugees. From next year, the new cloud-based system, which will be secure, and patient-centred, will replace the fragmented legacy platform eHealth, which has been used since 2009.
“This marks a pivotal moment for UNRWA’s digital health agenda where mission meets innovation to build more agile, efficient, and inclusive care systems,” said Mumtaz Tamim, Director of the Digital Impact, Technology and Innovation Department (DITID) at UNRWA.
The EMR platform securely connects the systems of laboratories, pharmacies, and other external medical partners, empowering UNRWA healthcare workers with real-time access to critical patient information. This will make it easier to monitor continuity of care and enable timelier, informed clinical decisions. With advanced AI capabilities, analytics and business intelligence tools, UNRWA can better monitor health trends, evaluate performance, and implement data-driven improvements that help create a better healthcare experience for Palestine Refugees.
