Towards Integrated Climate, Migration and Health Action in the MENA Region

The climate change, migration and health nexus has emerged as a critical policy priority, reflecting the increasingly interconnected impacts of environmental change on human mobility and health. Climate change can influence migration and displacement both directly, through sudden- and slow-onset hazards and indirectly, by affecting livelihoods, food and water security, living conditions and access to essential services. At the same time, climate-related pressures can intensify existing health risks, particularly for migrants, displaced populations and other vulnerable groups, including malnutrition, inadequate water and sanitation, heat-related illness, respiratory conditions, climate-sensitive vector-borne diseases and other communicable diseases.

These interconnections are particularly significant in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), a region facing growing exposure to climate change alongside complex patterns of migration, displacement and population mobility. Addressing these challenges requires moving beyond fragmented responses towards more integrated policies and programmes that recognize the mutually reinforcing dimensions of climate change, health and human mobility.
