Saudi Arabia Hosts International Workshop to Address Antimicrobial Resistance in Veterinary Medicine

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has taken a significant step forward in the battle against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) by hosting an international workshop in Jeddah. The event, organized by the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Plant Pests and Animal Diseases (Weqaa), brought together key figures including Weqaa CEO Eng. Ayman Alghamdi and Dr. Ali Al-Sheikhi, Undersecretary for Animal and Fisheries Resources Department at the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture. Representatives from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and other stakeholders were also in attendance.

The primary focus of the workshop was to deliberate on the GCC's four-year plan (2024-2027) aimed at curbing the spread of AMR in the veterinary sector, employing the One Health Approach. This initiative, spearheaded by the Kingdom, seeks to foster cooperation and align efforts across GCC nations to mitigate this global menace threatening human, animal, and environmental health.
