Latest data on Gaza confirms worst-case scenario: Famine unfolds with over 20,000 children hospitalized for acute malnutrition

  • After nearly two years of worsening violence and displacement, the latest IPC data released today indicates that famine thresholds have been reached in most of the Gaza Strip: Between April and mid-July, more than 20,000 children have suffered from acute malnutrition.
  • Hospitals have reported an increase in hunger-related child deaths, with at least 16 deaths since July 17th.
  • In July, more than 25% of pregnant and breastfeeding women assessed by Action Against Hunger teams were malnourished, an increase of 16% compared to June.
  • Almost 100% of children aged between 6 and 23 months, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women, are not able to meet their nutritional needs. As a result, 300,000 children under the age of five and 150,000 pregnant and breastfeeding women are in urgent need of therapeutic supplements.
  • Nearly a hundred Action Against Hunger professionals work daily in Gaza to fight malnutrition by providing available nutritional supplements, safe drinking water, hygiene promotion activities, and care.
