Wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1)

Cases:No new WPV1 positive cases reported this week. In total, 52 WPV1-positive cases have been confirmed in 2025 to date (21 from Afghanistan and 31 from Pakistan in 2025) and 2 WPV1 cases reported in 2026 (1 each from Afghanistan and Pakistan).

Environment: Two new WPV1 positive environmental samples in 2026 from Pakistan were reported this week. The new WPV1 positive samples are both from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (Wazirestan-North and Bannu districts) with collection date for both on 4th March 2026. In total, 741 WPV1-positive environmental samples have been reported in 2025 (90 from Afghanistan and 651 from Pakistan) and 58 WPV1-positive environmental samples reported in 2026 (17 from Afghanistan and 41 from Pakistan).
