The Future of Health Service Delivery in the African Region: Proceedings from the Health Policy Laboratories on Primary Care, Hospitals, and Health Oversight in Africa

The global health agenda is aligned around the need for revitalization of the revitalized Primary Health Care approach [1](PHC), for the attainment of expected health results. To facilitate the translation of the PHC approach, a global PHC operational framework has been elaborated, together with a measurement framework [2]. These are translated at the regional level as an action framework for strengthening health systems for UHC and SDGs in Africa [3]. This has been the basis for tracking health progress at the national and regional levels so far.  However, there is a lack of guidance on how countries should align their service delivery approaches to implement these concepts.

More emphasis is placed at the national level, to monitor progress and facilitate advocacy for attaining health results with less guidance on ‘how to’ attain desired outcomes. The Future of Health and Economic Resilience in Africa (FHERA) Commission presents an opportunity to identify the key recommendations and actions countries need to focus on, to ensure their health sectors are appropriately organized for the attainment of expected health results. This report highlights the key recommendations to countries that will facilitate this alignment.
