Saudi Arabia will commit $500 million to eradicate Polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan

The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced that Saudi Arabia has committed to providing 500 million dollars for the eradication of polio in Afghanistan and Pakistan. This financial support aims to accelerate efforts to end the transmission of the disease in these countries, where polio remains a major public health challenge.

The WHO stated in a release on Monday, February 24, that the pledged funds were committed by Saudi Arabia in April 2024. This announcement comes as a significant step in the global fight against polio, especially in regions where the disease continues to affect children. The funding will help strengthen vaccination campaigns and healthcare systems.

According to the WHO, a total of 99 polio cases were reported last year in Afghanistan and Pakistan. These numbers highlight the continued risk and the need for sustained efforts to eliminate the disease. The situation remains critical, with both countries facing challenges in achieving complete eradication.
