Earthquake in Morocco: Thousands of children and families affected

On 8 September 2023, a powerful earthquake struck Morocco, reportedly killing more than 2,000 people in different regions of the country and injuring thousands more. Many of those injured remain in critical condition.

The magnitude 6.8 temblor was the hardest to hit Morocco in 120 years. As with any major earthquake, aftershocks are likely to continue in the hours and days ahead, putting children and families at further risk.

In any emergency, children are always among the most vulnerable. Children and families may have been displaced by the quake and are in urgent need of assistance. While it is still unclear how many children have been impacted by the destruction, many people, including children, are likely to have been displaced due to their homes being destroyed, or because they are afraid of returning to damaged homes.
