▪ Six new WPV1 cases reported this week – 4 from Afghanistan and 2 from Pakistan. The WPV1 cases from Afghanistan are all from Kandahar province (2 from Arghestan and 1 each from Kandahar and Maywand districts), with dates of onset between 15th July and 5 th August 2024. The index case of Kandahar district was identified by positive contact. The WPV1 cases from Pakistan are: 1 each from Balochistan province (Kharan district) and Sindh province (Hyderabad district), with dates of onset on 31st July and 3 rd August 2024 respectively. The WPV1 case count in 2024 to date is 33 (17 from Afghanistan and 16 from Pakistan). In 2023, the count remains 12 (6 each from Afghanistan and Pakistan).

▪ Sixteen new WPV1 positive environmental samples (ES) from Pakistan reported this week. The new ES are: 6 from Balochistan province (2 from Chaman, and 1 each from Pishin, Loralai, Quetta, and Zhob districts), 5 from Sindh province (1 each from Karachi Keamari town, Sujawal, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, and Badin districts), 2 each from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province (from Karak and Peshawar districts), and from Punjab province (from Rawalpindi and Lahore districts), and 1 from Islamabad province (CDA district), with samples collection dates between 5 th – 8 th August 2024. ES count to date in 2024 is 348 (66 from Afghanistan and 282 from Pakistan). In 2023, the count remains 188 (62 from Afghanistan and 126 from Pakistan)

Vaccine derived poliovirus (VDPV)

▪ One new cVDPV2 case from Occupied Palestinian Territory reported this week. The case was reported from Deir Al-Balah district, Gaza province, with date of onset 25th July 2024. The cVDPV2 case count in 2024 is 37 (33 from Yemen, 3 from Somalia, and 1 from Occupied Palestinian Territory). In 2023, the count remains 16 (8 each from Somalia and Yemen).

▪ No new cVDPV2 ES reported this week. The count of cVDPV2 ES positives in 2024 to date is 18 (6 each from Yemen and Occupied Palestinian Territory, 3 from Somalia, 2 from Sudan, and 1 from Egypt). In 2023, the count remains 41 (16 from Yemen, 11 from Egypt, 9 from Somalia, and 5 from Sudan).

▪ One VDPV2 ES from Egypt, earlier reported as advance notification last week, was officially reported from Cairo province (El Salam Site), with collection date on 1 st August 2024.
