In a recent report, the World Health Organization said that in May, 13,451 people in Afghanistan were infected with cholera.

According to the report, Afghanistan topped the list of Eastern Mediterranean countries with the highest number of cholera cases.

During the month of May, Afghanistan witnessed nine deaths due to cholera.

The report mentioned: "In May 2024, the Eastern Mediterranean Region reported 33,779 new cholera cases across six countries, marking a 110% increase compared with the previous month. During this period, the highest numbers of cases were reported from Afghanistan (13,451 cases), Pakistan (13,075 cases), Yemen (3,851 cases), Somalia (3,062 cases), and the Syrian Arab Republic (307 cases). Additionally, there were 54 cholera-related deaths, a 12% increase compared with the previous month.”

The report also said that from January 1 to May 26 of this year, 194,897 cholera cases were recorded in 24 countries worldwide.
