Reflections on 2023 and hope for a better 2024 - By Dr. Mohannad Al Nsour

Jordan Daily –  As we reflect on the year that unfolded, marked by the end of the COVID-19 global health emergency in May 2023, we recognize that 2023 posed unparalleled challenges for the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). Despite the hopeful declaration earlier in the year, our region grappled with a series of complex crises that demanded our collective attention and response.

The aftermath of earthquakes in Syria, Morocco, and Afghanistan, coupled with floods in Libya, tested the resilience of our communities. Tragically, Sudan faced conflict, resulting in displacement and terror, while the ongoing war in Gaza added to the region’s burdens. Numerous epidemics, emergencies, and challenging events underscored the need for sustained humanitarian efforts. Beyond immediate crises, we witnessed an increased burden of non-communicable diseases, mental health issues, malnutrition, and a rise in smoking and tobacco use across many countries.
