A recent policy paper by the Jordanian Economic Forum highlights that Jordanian families spend an average of JD 540 annually on tobacco products and cigarettes, constituting 13.5 percent of their total food expenditures, ranking second after meat and poultry.

The paper revealed, based on data from the Department of General Statistics' latest survey, spending percentages on tobacco and cigarettes in Irbid Governorate is the lowest in the country with 12 percent in Irbid in comparison to 13-15 percent in other governorates. 

The paper emphasized the health risks associated with smoking, including vaping, noting that it leads to numerous non-communicable diseases and poses a significant threat to public health in Jordan. More than 9,000 deaths annually are attributed to smoking, with most occurring among individuals under the age of 70.

In terms of economic impact, Jordan imports electronic cigarettes worth 1.4 million dinars annually, with a quantity of liquid cigarette preparations totaling 18,596 kilograms between 2020 and 2021. Despite contributing approximately JD 889 million to the annual economic activity, the tobacco industry's losses from smoking reach JD 1.6 billion, accounting for 6 percent of GDP in 2015.
