Iraq, Gulf brace for severe heatwave with temperatures reaching 50°C and above

The Arab Weather Center has issued a severe warning for an upcoming "scorching" heatwave expected to hit by Wednesday, with temperatures predicted to soar to 50 degrees Celsius across several Arab countries, including Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, and the UAE.

In a bulletin released Monday, the centre highlighted that significant parts of the Arabian Peninsula will be affected by this extreme heatwave. The heatwave is driven by a high-pressure system intensifying in the upper layers of the atmosphere and a deepening thermal low-pressure system in eastern Arabia.

Iraq's Meteorological Authority has also detailed the week's forecast, warning of temperatures nearing 50 degrees Celsius amid rising dust conditions. On Tuesday, temperatures will peak at 49 degrees Celsius in Basra and Maysan, 48 degrees Celsius in Najaf, Thi Qar, and Muthanna, and 46 degrees Celsius in Baghdad. Clear skies with some clouds will dominate, with a slight temperature rise in central and southern provinces and stability in the north.
