The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is pleased to announce a new $3.2 million investment from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria’s Climate and Health Catalytic Fund. This funding will help strengthen Afghanistan’s response to the health impacts of climate change, especially among vulnerable communities such as internally displaced persons (IDPs) and returnees, benefiting more than 1.4 million people across 15 provinces.

The resources will be used to address tuberculosis (TB) and malaria among populations most affected by climate change through the following interventions:

• Identifying new active TB cases in 57 IDP settlements across 15 provinces;
• Distributing insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) in malaria high-risk provinces including Nangarhar, Laghman, Kunar, Nooristan, Khost, and Paktika.
• Providing malaria case management services; and
• Expanding community health worker (CHW) training to include climate-health content. 

” By addressing health issues worsened by climate change, this funding will help save lives and prevent disease,” said Stephen Rodriques, UNDP Resident Representative in Afghanistan.

Implemented in alignment with national priorities and in close coordination with partners, the Climate and Health Catalytic Fund ensures that all activities are data-driven, inclusive, and sustainable.
