Mental Health Program: Amputee Children in Gaza Begin Their First Support Sessions

HEAL Palestine has begun psychological support sessions at the Mental Health Center for amputee children in Gaza, starting with a first group of six children between the ages of 6 and 10.

The children in this group are Sila, 7, Zeina, 9, Ghada, 8, Ahmed, 9, Rajab, 10, and Suhaib, 6. Each child carries a personal story of injury, loss, and survival. Together, they are beginning a new stage of healing.

For children who have lost limbs, recovery is not only physical. Amputation affects how a child moves, plays, relates to others, and understands their own body. Many children also carry grief, fear, anxiety, and memories of the traumatic events that changed their lives.

Through these group sessions, HEAL Palestine is creating a safe space where amputee children can express themselves, connect with peers, and begin rebuilding confidence. The sessions use age-appropriate activities, guided discussion, play, and emotional support to help children understand their feelings and develop healthy coping skills.

This work is part of HEAL Palestine’s broader commitment to children in the Amputee Program, where care includes medical follow-up, rehabilitation, prosthetic planning, family support, and mental health services.

For Sila, Zeina, Ghada, Ahmed, Rajab, and Suhaib, these first sessions are small but important steps toward healing. They remind each child that they are not alone, that their emotions matter, and that recovery must care for both the body and the heart.
