Africa CDC Secures Over US$250 Million to Advance Africa’s Global Health Security Agenda at the Lyon One Health Summit in Lyon (France)

The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) welcomes the outcomes of the One Health Summit held in Lyon, France, that affirms a decisive shift: Africa is no longer at the margins of global health—it is shaping its future.

Africa CDC expresses its appreciation to H.E. Emmanuel Macron for convening this landmark Summit and commends the leadership of H.E. John Mahama and H.E. Duma Boko. The strong and coordinated presence of African leaders ensured that the continent’s priorities and agenda of Africa Health Security and Sovereignty (AHSS) were not only represented, but advanced.

Africa CDC is proud to be a signatory to the “One Health & Beyond: Multi-stakeholder Declaration” that marks a critical step towards a coordinated global response to emerging health threats at the human-animal-environment interface, alongside a broad coalition of countries and partners, including Armenia, Botswana, Brazil, Cambodia, Cyprus, DRC, Egypt, France, Kenya, Mexico, Singapore, Thailand, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, the WHO, FAO, and CGIAR.

Strategic Investments Aligned with Africa’s Leadership

Africa CDC welcomes the European Union Commissioner Jozef Sikela’s announcement of a €96.5 million investment to strengthen health security, including a flagship €46.5 million programme to advance antimicrobial resistance (AMR) response and build a resilient One Health workforce across Africa. Implemented under Africa CDC leadership, this programme will strengthen surveillance, expand laboratory capacity, and deepen collaboration with leading European institutions. €50 million investment in research and development will accelerate the development of new medical countermeasures against AMR and climate-sensitive diseases, reinforcing global preparedness.
