Dr Caroline Clarinval formally began her assignment as World Health Organization (WHO) Representative to the Syrian Arab Republic today, following the presentation of her credentials to Dr Saad Baroud, Director of the International Organizations and Conferences Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates.

During the meeting, Dr Clarinval affirmed WHO’s commitment to supporting the Ministry of Health’s vision for rebuilding Syria’s health system stronger than before – one that is nationally led, people-centred and equipped to deliver quality health services sustainably across the country.

“Syria has an important opportunity to shape the health system it needs for the future,” said Dr Clarinval. “WHO will work alongside the Ministry of Health to translate its vision into practical reforms – strengthening institutions, investing in the health workforce and building an integrated system that connects communities, primary health care, hospitals and public health services.”

“Our role is to bring the technical expertise, evidence, international standards and partnerships needed to support lasting health-system transformation and ensure that investments made today strengthen the system for generations to come,” she added.

Dr Clarinval recognized the commitment and expertise of Syria’s health workers and national institutions, whose leadership will be central to the country’s health recovery and development.

WHO will support the Ministry of Health to strengthen governance and planning; develop and retain the health workforce; expand quality primary health care; improve referral pathways; strengthen supply chains and access to essential medicines; and advance laboratories, disease surveillance, digital health and health information systems.

Greater integration across these areas will help people move more easily between community, primary, specialized and hospital services and receive continuous care, from prevention and diagnosis to treatment and rehabilitation.
