The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported on Friday a rapid spread of cholera in Yemen, driven by conflict and poverty, with 201 deaths and 72,000 infections recorded since the start of the year.
According to Reuters, WHO data showed that between January 1 and August 31, Yemen registered 72,260 cases of cholera and acute watery diarrhoea, including 201 related deaths. August alone accounted for 10,848 new cases and 34 deaths.
The report indicated that Yemen ranks third globally in cholera prevalence after Afghanistan, with 116,083 cases, and South Sudan, with 74,494 cases. In 2024, cholera claimed 879 lives in Yemen out of more than 260,000 cases, representing 35% of global infections and 18% of deaths.
