Three days following the devastating earthquake that struck southwest of Marrakech on 8 September, Moroccan authorities confirmed the loss of 2,497 lives and the injury of 2,476 people, with the number of casualties expected to increase as the search and rescue operations continue. Most fatalities are reported in Al Haouz municipality while the rest are reported in Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant provinces.
Government authorities are leading the response and delivering vital aid and support to those affected by this tragedy. Food, water, psychosocial support and shelter items are the main reported needs. Due to the extensive damage caused by the earthquake, many people have been forced out of their homes, seeking refuge in public facilities, and sleeping outside.
