11 million measles cases expected worldwide in 2026

Health experts have warned of a global resurgence of measles this year, with millions of people at risk as declining vaccination rates contribute to outbreaks and potentially serious complications.

Around 11 million people worldwide are expected to contract measles in 2026, as dozens of countries experience outbreaks across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Most cases are concentrated in low- and middle-income countries, although the virus has also re-emerged in countries with advanced healthcare systems.

The World Health Organisation estimates that most infections will be recorded in Africa and Asia, while outbreaks have also affected countries in Europe and the Americas.

Measles remains one of the world's most contagious diseases. There is no specific treatment for it, although vaccines have proven safe and effective in preventing infection.
